Best hard disk
drive (HDD) practices will be discussed for reliability, cost, and DRM.
Applications covered include (1) consumer electronics HDD products, (2)
reliable low cost storage systems using serial ATA HDDs, to insure storage
system data integrity and lower total cost of ownership, (3) using HDDs for
archival storage, and (4) removing user data from released disks for DRM.

received his PhD from CalTech in Electrical Engineering and his BS in
Physics. He spent 15 years at Xerox PARC (El Segundo Advanced Development
Lab) working in disk drive magnetic recording research. His most recent
paper is in the ACM Transactions on Storage, on achieving reliable storage
systems with low cost SATA disk drives. He was Senior Director of
Recording Technology at Seagate Technology and is currently Associate Director
of CMRR at UCSD. He is a fellow of the IEEE.
