Disk drive
applications in handheld consumer electronics equipment is seeing explosive
growth, yet the disk interface typically used for that application today is
poorly suited for that purpose. CE-ATA promises to deliver a storage interface
tailored to the needs of small formfactor disk drives in handheld CE
applications. Some of the shortcomings of existing interface solutions for this
application will be discussed as well as the approaches CE-ATA is taking to
address these areas, with additional focus on areas supporting improved
integration efficiency.

is a Sr. Principal Engineer at Intel where his responsibilities include storage
performance, interfaces, and architecture. He leads the Storage Technology Lab,
a small research and development team, and his current projects concentrate on
definition and development of next generation storage interface technology and
software-driven storage performance optimization techniques. He holds a PhD in
Electrical and Computer Engineering from Brigham Young University and has been
with Intel for 11 years. Over the past several years, Knut has been awarded 19
patents in the field of storage performance and architecture. Knut currently
serves as the chairman of the Serial ATA International Organization and he is
also prominent in the CE-ATA initiative.
