Alternative Television Models: IPTV and DTT 

Abstract

This speech reports on the latest developments in non-traditional, television delivery applications.  Akimbo, Starz and Tivo are using broadband to deliver Internet-based programming to the television via DVRs.  Besides these newcomers, Microsoft is teaming up with RBOCs to deliver IPTV on a massive scale.  Other broadcasters like USDTV, Emmis and SpectraRep are using over-the-air, Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) broadcasts to deliver content to proprietary set-top boxes and personal computers.  Entrepreneurs are finding new ways to reach viewers and this presentation will reveal the advances that these companies have made in the last year and what to expect in the coming years.

Biography

Scott is an author of Broadband Entertainment and has written several books on Storage Area Networks for the Fibre Channel Industry Association.  In 2004, Scott wrote a series of reports on HDTV for the Diffusion Group - a think tank targeting the digital home.  With three classes based on Broadband Entertainment, Baylor University works closely with the author and sponsored the Digital Home Symposium.  He is currently writing a book entitled Fibre Channel Virtualization that will reveal the latest developments in SANs including iFCP, FCIP, Virtual Fabrics and Virtualization.

 

Scott works in the Office of the CTO of McDATA Corporation and creates ANSI standards for gigabit storage networks.  He measures and models performance and designs software and hardware for next-generation Fibre Channel Directors.  Specializing in fiber optics, Scott has marketed long distance (>50 km) gigabit transceivers and sold fiber optic cables.  He has an eclectic background in remote sensing satellites and X-ray cameras.
